Deep Fried Man
Award-winning musical comedian Deep Fried Man was dropped on his head several times as a young child, and this has had a profound effect on his songwriting style. He started out as a serious musician before realising that the audience was laughing at him, after which he decided to try and at least make them laugh on purpose. He has been rocking comedy gigs all around the country ever since, and has been lucky enough to perform at some of South Africa’s largest comedy events – the Nando’s Jozi Comedy Fest, Heavyweight Comedy Jam, Mind the Gap and LNN Live at the Lyric Theatre to name a few.
2011 saw Deep Fried Man accomplish a whole bunch of crazy things. These include his debut one-man show, which won a Standard Bank Ovation Award at the Grahamstown festival, and the release of a CD. He has had huge internet viral success with ‘An Idiot’s Guide to the SA Anthem’, a YouTube video he made alongside fellow comedian Gareth Woods, and a topic he started for fun on Twitter, #askhelenzille, in which he directed random questions at DA leader Helen Zille, became one of the top South African twitter trends of all time, trending worldwide and earning him a lunch invitation from Zille.
Deep Fried Man has also had significant exposure on local TV, appearing on LOL, Tonight With Trevor Noah, Opening Guys, Morning Live and MTV Meets, on which he was part of a panel interviewing ANCYL leader Julius Malema. 2012 will see him make his first film appearance, in Riaad Moosa’s Material. The highlight of his career so far, though, was performing ‘Ice, Ice Baby’ to Vanilla Ice himself. Deep Fried Man’s songs are outrageous, uniquely South African, sometimes satirical and controversial but always entertaining. Apart from his usual material he can also tailor-make comedy songs specifically for your functions or corporate event.
“Fantastic… Creative improv, great rapport with audience, jumps genres all the time… I love his sense of humour. Wacky and unique.”
